Dorcas Circle

Dorcas (also known as Tabitha) was a disciple, living in Joppa, who spent her life doing good works and helping the poor. When she died the townspeople were so distraught they called upon Peter, who happened to be in Joppa at the time, to raise her from the dead. And so he did.

The Dorcas Circle, established in 1975, is a Methodist women’s group devoutly committed to God, asking Him in prayer, to guide and instruct us. It is through Him we are moved to help.

- The Dorcas Circle undertakes one major project each year, in addition to smaller, individual projects. This year’s big project was the renovation of The Soul Café. This was a major undertaking with spectacular results, thanks not only to The Dorcas Circle, but also the many generous people who donated time, money and effort. We had the grand unveiling on July 29, with plenty of food, fellowship and entertainment.

- Periodically we raise funds to assist with the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. One year, we raised $5,000 to defray the cost of apportionments.

- Another project is S.A.N.E. (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner), a project through Denton Regional Medical Center, which provides clothing for abused men, women, and an average of 40 children a month. The Dorcas Circle donated $300, which bought 18 pair of scrub pants, and also individually purchased 6 of every size in underwear and T-shirts to help begin the “Needs Closet”. Scrubs for the children have to be made by volunteers. A scrap of fabric, even one yard, will make a size 2 top. If you have any scraps to donate, or know of a fabric store willing to help, please call Paula Yosten, 940-384-3104.

- We are also here to help individual families in need.

The money for our various undertakings comes not only from our personal contributions, but also from you, our loving and generous church family. So next time we put on a big spaghetti dinner, host a breakfast for our Confirmation class, or sell the ever-popular pumpkin rolls, reach deep down in your pocket and remember our only purpose, like Dorcas, is to do good deeds and help those in need.
